Living with Parkinson’s disease

Managing Parkinson’s disease (PD) requires a comprehensive approach. Because PD is a progressive disorder, your needs will change over time.

While there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are many ways to manage your symptoms. By focusing on your daily habits, emotional well-being, and future planning, you can improve your quality of life and live life on your terms.

Staying active and engaged

Physical activity is a critical part of living well with PD. Studies show that getting at least 2.5 hours of exercise each week can actually slow the progression of your symptoms.

Focus on a mix of strength training, flexibility, and aerobic activity. You can also benefit from specialized therapies with members of your Parkinson’s care team:

  • Physical therapy to improve balance and mobility
  • Occupational therapy to help maintain independence in daily tasks
  • Speech therapy to address vocal or swallowing difficulties

Planning for the future with DBS

In the early stages of PD, your doctor will likely prescribe medications to manage your tremors and stiffness. However, you may find that these medications become less effective over time.

When medications no longer provide consistent relief, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may be considered as a surgical treatment option. Living with the Vercise Genus™ DBS System means choosing a therapy that adapts to your life.¹

Because living with PD requires ongoing care, our system is designed to keep your future medical options open. Many of our components are MRI-conditional, meaning you can safely receive full-body MRI scans if needed later in life. We also offer your choice of battery options — including a rechargeable battery warrantied for up to 15 years or a maintenance-free non-rechargeable option — so your system fits your daily routine.

Finding your support network

Living with PD impacts your whole family, but a vast network of support is available. Connect with others who understand exactly what you are going through.
